Elfego Esparza


The Valley's Own World Famous Opera Singer

and 1948 graduate of San Benito High School

Elfego Esparza was born in El Ranchito, Texas and was nicknamed "Beans" because he loved to eat beans. He delivered newspapers early in the morning and would whistle to keep his courage up in the dark. He attended San Benito Schools where his talent was first recognized by Mr. Ed Hatchett, his choral teacher. Mr. Hatchett encouraged Elfego to study voice. He went on to Trinity University in San Antonio and then continued at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and the Academy of Music in Vienna. He sang in all major Opera houses in the world including La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang for five years.

He sang before Germany's Prince Louis Ferdinand, Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, and Former Irish President Eamon de Vera, to name only a few.
